Why a Turbo Cowl Might Be the Best Thing You Ever Add to Your Chimney or Braai

If you've ever had smoke billowing back into your living room on a windy evening, or spent half your braai fighting a fire that just won't draw properly — you already know the frustration. And if you've been putting off fixing it because you weren't sure where to start, we get it. That's exactly the kind of problem we've been solving for over two decades here at MetalMade.
One of our most popular solutions? The turbo cowl. And in this post, we want to pull back the curtain a little — talk about what these things actually are, why they work so well, and how we make them right here in our workshop in Montague Gardens.

So, What Exactly Is a Turbo Cowl?
A turbo cowl (also called a chimney cowl or chimney cap) is a high-performance, stationary ventilation unit that fits over the top of your chimney flue. It's designed to do three things really well:
Increase updraft — improving the draw of your chimney so your fire burns cleaner and more efficiently
Prevent downdraft — stopping wind from pushing smoke back down into your home or outdoor braai area
Protect your flue — keeping out rain, debris, and yes, even birds that love to nest in open chimneys
Our turbo cowls are fixed units — they bolt directly onto or slide over your existing chimney or brick braai flue. No moving parts to worry about, no maintenance headaches. Just solid, reliable sheet metal engineering.
Why Downdraft Is More Than Just an Annoyance
A lot of people assume that smoke occasionally coming back into the house is just "one of those things" — especially on gusty Cape Town days when the southeaster is doing its worst. But persistent downdraft isn't just unpleasant; it's a sign that your chimney system isn't working the way it should.
Poor chimney draw can mean:
Incomplete combustion and more creosote build-up (a fire hazard)
Smoke damage to walls and ceilings over time
An inefficient braai that uses more wood to produce the same heat
That distinctive smoky smell lingering in your home long after the fire is out
A quality chimney cowl solves this at the source — by creating the right aerodynamic conditions at the top of the flue to keep airflow moving in one direction: up and out.
How We Make Our Turbo Cowls at MetalMade
Here's where it gets interesting, and honestly, it's the part we're most proud of.
Every turbo cowl we make comes out of our workshop in Montague Gardens, Cape Town. We're not importing these from overseas or buying in bulk stock. We fabricate them ourselves, using the same skills and machinery we've relied on since MetalMade started trading in January 2000.
The process starts with selecting the right sheet metal for the job. Most of our cowls are made from mild steel or stainless steel, depending on the customer's requirements and budget. Stainless is the premium choice — it handles the heat, moisture, and salt air that Cape Town dishes out, and it'll outlast a mild steel version by years when properly finished.
From there, our team uses our 3-metre guillotine to cut the flat sheets to size. Precision matters here — even small inaccuracies in the cut can affect how the final cowl sits and performs. Our guillotine handles material from 0.5mm right up to 6mm mild steel and 5mm stainless steel, giving us a lot of flexibility depending on the application.
Next comes the shaping. Our 3.2-metre press brake bends the metal into the profiles that give the cowl its functional form. This is where experience really counts — knowing exactly where to apply pressure and at what angle to achieve clean, accurate bends without cracking or distorting the metal.
For the cylindrical sections, our rolling machines (capable of rolling up to 8mm thick) are used to create smooth, round profiles. And our jenny machines and lock-forming equipment help us create the interlocking joints and folded edges that give the finished cowl its structural integrity.
The whole thing is then welded, finished, and quality-checked before it goes out the door.

Custom Sizing — Because Not All Flues Are the Same
One of the questions we get most often is: "Will it fit my chimney?"
The honest answer is: it depends — and that's exactly why we offer custom fabrication. Standard flue sizes vary quite a bit, especially in older Cape Town homes where chimneys were built by hand and rarely to a consistent spec. We can fabricate turbo cowls to fit virtually any flue diameter or profile, whether it's round, square, or rectangular.
All you need to do is send us your measurements, and we'll quote accordingly. It's a simple process, and it means you get a cowl that actually fits properly rather than a one-size-fits-most solution propped up with silicone.
Turbo Cowls for Braais — A Specifically South African Problem
We'd be doing our readers a disservice if we didn't talk about braais specifically, because this is South Africa and the braai is practically sacred.
A poorly drawing braai is genuinely one of life's great frustrations. You've got the family over, the meat is ready, and you're spending the first twenty minutes of the afternoon coaxing a fire that keeps threatening to die. Half the time it's not the wood or the technique — it's the chimney design of the brick braai itself.
A turbo cowl fitted to your braai chimney can make a noticeable difference in how quickly and consistently your fire draws. Better draw means a hotter, more even fire, and that means better results on the grid. We've had plenty of customers come back just to say their braai "works properly now" — which, in our line of work, is about as good a compliment as it gets.
Why Choose MetalMade for Your Turbo Cowl?
There are a few places you can source chimney cowls in Cape Town, so we won't pretend we're the only option. But here's what we think sets us apart:
We make it ourselves. Everything that leaves our workshop was fabricated by us, in-house. That means we control the quality from raw sheet metal to finished product.
We've been doing this since 2000. Over 25 years of sheet metal fabrication experience means we've seen just about every chimney configuration imaginable. We know what works.
We can custom fabricate. If your flue is an unusual size or you need something specific, we can build it. That's the benefit of working with a fabricator rather than a retailer.
We're based in Cape Town. We understand the local conditions — the wind, the weather, the older housing stock — in a way that a national online supplier simply can't.
